Toys “R” Us Returns to Big-Box Retail With 120 New U.S. Stores

Nearly a decade after its U.S. bankruptcy and mass store closures, Toys “R” Us is making a significant return to physical retail.

The retailer plans to open 120 standalone stores across the United States in time for the 2026 holiday season, in partnership with Go! Retail Group. The expansion will bring its standalone U.S. footprint to 160 locations, alongside existing Toys “R” Us sections inside Macy’s stores.

One of the newest stores opened on August 31 at South Shore Plaza in Braintree, Massachusetts. For a brand that liquidated more than 700 U.S. stores after its 2017 bankruptcy, the return to standalone locations represents a notable change in direction.

But the new Toys “R” Us is not simply rebuilding the retail model it left behind.

Turning Stores Into Places for Discovery

The expansion puts considerable emphasis on the experience of visiting a toy store.

New locations will carry categories ranging from toys and collectibles to gifts, including products from LEGO, Barbie, Hot Wheels and Pokémon. Some stores will feature Creator Studios designed for product launches, toy demonstrations and content creation, while selected locations will also include cafés and candy shops.

This makes sense for a category where seeing, touching and trying a product can be particularly valuable. Toys can be demonstrated and discovered in ways that are difficult to reproduce entirely through a product page.

Go! Retail Group describes the stores as focused on the in-store experience, with interactive play areas and other activities. Online shopping through ToysRUs.com, meanwhile, operates under a separate partnership.

Rather than treating e-commerce and physical stores as interchangeable, Toys “R” Us appears to be giving the store a distinct purpose: discovery and experience.

Physical Retail Still Needs Digital Product Content

That does not make digital product information less important.

A shopper may first encounter a toy in a store, search for it on a phone, compare prices, check reviews or specifications, and eventually purchase it online. The opposite journey is just as possible: a parent may research products online before visiting a store to see them in person.

For retailers operating across these different environments, the product needs to remain recognizable wherever the customer encounters it.

This is where the Toys “R” Us expansion becomes relevant to Icecat.

Structured product information gives retailers and brands a consistent foundation of identifiers, descriptions, specifications, images, age recommendations and other attributes that can be reused across e-commerce sites, marketplaces and other digital channels.

For toys in particular, details such as recommended age, dimensions, included components, product themes and safety information can influence purchasing decisions. Go! Retail Group itself notes that its stores organize products to help customers shop by age.

As a retailer expands its physical footprint, keeping the digital representation of those assortments accurate becomes part of maintaining a consistent customer experience.

The Store and Product Page Have Different Jobs

The Toys “R” Us comeback also offers a useful counterpoint to predictions that e-commerce would make large physical stores obsolete.

The company is returning to standalone retail while continuing to operate through digital and store-within-a-store channels. It is also expanding into travel retail, including airport locations.

Each environment serves customers differently.

A physical toy store can provide demonstrations, play and spontaneous discovery. An e-commerce catalog can offer detailed information, search, filtering and comparison across a much larger assortment.

The challenge is connecting those experiences around the same products.

Toys “R” Us is therefore not simply recreating the retail footprint it lost in 2018. Its comeback is taking place in a market where consumers move constantly between stores, websites, marketplaces and mobile devices.

For retailers, physical expansion and digital product content are not competing strategies. Together, they let the store create the experience, while accurate product information helps the customer continue the journey wherever they choose to shop next.
