For a start-up business in the e-commerce industry, a proper overview of the top e-commerce platforms and their market shares is a no-brainer as this helps to choose the right eshop platform according to the type of the business, market preferences and budget. Since the pandemic, there is no denying that e-commerce platforms are booming. As time progresses, people are getting more and more dependent on e-commerce for fulfilling shopping needs as they shift away from conventional marketplaces.
According to the latest 2021 report of Statista, WooCommerce is by far the biggest e-commerce webshop platform. It has an enormous 23% market share worldwide among merchants. On the other hand, competitors like Shopify and Magento, only have a market share of 3% and 2%. This enormous gap of around 20% shows how far ahead WooCommerce is of the competition.

So, WooCommerce is the biggest e-commerce platform, because it is the most popular WordPress plugin. But, the competitive landscape is different if we compare the market share for the top 1 million e-commerce sites on the internet only. In this top segment WooCommerce is still leading, but with a smaller margin with Shopify, Magento, OpenCart and BigCommerce.
On the other hand, Shopify is typed into Google more often than WooCommerce according to Google Trends. It may not be the most accurate indication of market share, but it does help to get an idea of how search-worthy Shopify, Bigcommerce, Woocommerce, Magento, and Prestashop are.
