German Online Stores Lose Google Visibility as AI Changes Product Discovery

German online stores are losing visibility in Google search as AI-generated answers take a larger role in how consumers find information online.

In June 2026, the organic visibility of major German online stores was 16.7% lower than a year earlier, according to a joint study by SEO software provider Sistrix and digital marketing agency Leap. The research analyzed almost 2,500 large online stores, which the researchers say represent around 90% of Germany’s online market.

At the same time, Google AI Overviews are appearing much more frequently. The share of analyzed search terms triggering an AI Overview increased from 4.3% to 14.2% within a year.

For e-commerce businesses, this raises an important question: what happens when Google increasingly answers a shopper’s question before they visit an online store?

AI Is Taking Over More of the Discovery Process

The impact of AI Overviews differs significantly depending on what consumers are searching for.

For informational searches, an AI Overview appeared in 69.7% of the queries analyzed by Sistrix and Leap. For searches with direct purchase intent, the figure was just 0.2%.

That distinction is important for e-commerce.

A shopper may eventually search for a particular product with the intention of buying it, but the purchasing journey often starts much earlier. Consumers research differences between models, compare specifications, investigate compatibility or look for recommendations before deciding what to purchase.

These are precisely the informational stages where AI-generated results appear most frequently.

If Google answers more of these questions directly, retailers may receive fewer visits during the research phase even if their product pages continue ranking well for transactional searches.

Organic Traffic Is Already Declining

The study suggests this change is already visible in traffic numbers.

Organic search accounted for 42.5% of total website traffic among the retailers analyzed last year. This year, that share has fallen to 33.3%. Sistrix and Leap estimate that revenue generated through organic search among Germany’s major e-commerce businesses has fallen by €7.5 billion to approximately €28 billion.

That does not mean traditional SEO is becoming irrelevant.

In fact, the study found a strong relationship between conventional Google visibility and visibility inside AI-generated answers. The 20% most visible online stores accounted for around 72% of all AI citations.

Strong organic visibility therefore still matters. But retailers may increasingly need to think about an additional objective alongside ranking: whether their information is useful enough for an AI system to reference.

From Ranking to Being Citable

This introduces a different way of thinking about e-commerce visibility.

Traditional search optimization focuses heavily on helping a page appear prominently when someone searches for a relevant keyword. AI-mediated search adds another challenge: providing information that a system can understand, trust and use when constructing an answer.

For product discovery, that puts greater emphasis on the information surrounding the product itself.

Clear specifications, standardized attributes, identifiers, compatibility information, descriptions and other factual content can help explain exactly what differentiates one product from another.

Icecat structures and standardizes product information so that brands, distributors, retailers and marketplaces can exchange and reuse it consistently. As AI systems become another layer between product catalogs and consumers, machine-readable product information can also help those systems understand products more accurately.

A retailer might have thousands of technically relevant products for a customer’s question. If the underlying information is incomplete or inconsistent, however, an AI system has less reliable material with which to identify the right ones.

Product Discovery Is Moving Beyond the Search Results Page

Google’s change is part of a wider transformation in e-commerce discovery.

Consumers can already ask ChatGPT and other AI assistants for product recommendations, comparisons and explanations. Retailers are introducing their own conversational shopping assistants, while AI agents are gradually becoming capable of performing more steps in the purchasing process.

Google’s AI Overviews bring similar behavior directly into the world’s dominant search engine.

This does not mean consumers will stop visiting e-commerce websites. Transactional searches remain largely unaffected by AI Overviews, according to research from Sistrix and Leap. But the journey leading to those transactions may increasingly happen through AI-generated interfaces.

For retailers and brands, visibility must therefore be considered across both traditional search and AI-driven discovery.

SEO Is Not Disappearing, but Its Role Is Changing

A 16.7% decline in organic visibility among Germany’s largest online stores is significant. But the research also suggests that abandoning traditional SEO would be the wrong response.

The retailers with the strongest conventional search presence are also receiving most AI citations.

The challenge is therefore becoming broader. E-commerce businesses still need technically sound websites and strong search visibility, but they also need useful, detailed and trustworthy information that can travel beyond the conventional search result.

For product catalogs, that means making product information understandable not only to the shopper who eventually reaches the product page, but also to the AI system helping that shopper decide what to look for in the first place.

As Google changes from simply directing users toward information to increasingly interpreting that information for them, being found may no longer be enough.

Increasingly, the challenge will be being understood and considered useful enough to become part of the answer.
