Understanding EPR and The Upcoming Data Model

By
EPR

Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) is a policy approach that emphasizes the responsibility regarding the entire lifecycle of packaging in the EU market with a particular focus on recycling and disposal for the party that brings the product to the EU market.

At Icecat we are working closely with channel partners to coordinate an approach for mapping out compliance requirements and in developing our data model for the anticipated rollout of more stringent EPR standards in Europe.

Who does the EPR apply to?

1. Manufacturers

2. Importers

3. Distributors

4. Retailers

How does EPR work and how do we support the above-mentioned in our involvement?

1. Producers register with EPR schemes (also called compliance or take-back schemes) in each country they operate.

2. Producers report data on the amount and types of packaging they place on the market.

This is where Icecat comes into play by outlining the specific data needed for compliance.

3. Fees are paid based on the amount, weight, and type of packaging materials.

Higher fees may apply for materials that are difficult to recycle (e.g., certain plastics).

4. EPR schemes handle the collection, sorting, and recycling of packaging waste.

Our data model

The approach being taken is through a flow method where we first capture the product identifiers and transition into a packaging breakdown specification of Base and Sub-category packaging that interconnects with the Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation, ensuring compliance in both areas of regulation.

From this breakdown, the consideration of material ingredients, shape, material purpose, function, component disruptors, and inks, coatings, and adhesives are captured to help understand the overall color grading system of Green, Yellow, or Red for module fee contributions.

The more in-depth visual breakdown as well as further resources will be available soon as we roll out information/data requests of economic operators involved.
