Managing product images is becoming increasingly sophisticated. Different markets may require different image priorities, while some visual content should only be available to selected partners. To support these growing needs, this release delivers major behind-the-scenes progress in modernizing Icecat’s Gallery architecture while preparing the platform for new gallery capabilities.
Although most of the work in this sprint focused on infrastructure rather than visible user interface changes, it establishes the foundation for several important features that will become available in upcoming releases.
One of the largest initiatives in this release is the migration of the Gallery functionality from the monolithic platform into a dedicated microservice.
This architectural change allows the Gallery to evolve independently, making future enhancements easier to develop, deploy, and maintain without affecting unrelated parts of the platform. During this sprint, we completed the core service foundation, including its own data storage, communication interfaces, image storage capabilities, monitoring, deployment pipeline, and integration framework. Business functionality will now be built on top of this foundation.
We also enhanced the shared microservice framework used across Icecat. These improvements benefit not only the Gallery project but also future microservices by providing reusable storage capabilities and a more secure, reliable development foundation.
Modernizing the architecture should never make daily work more complicated.
A key achievement in this sprint ensures that editors and brand partners will continue uploading images directly from their computers, just as they do today, even after the new Gallery service is fully introduced. Behind the scenes, the upload process has been redesigned so files can be securely transferred between the existing platform and the new Gallery service without changing the familiar user experience.
We also completed the infrastructure that automatically makes newly uploaded images immediately available through Icecat’s delivery platform, ensuring that customers can access them as soon as they are published.
To further improve reliability, new safeguards were introduced so that background image-processing tasks are automatically recovered if temporary communication failures occur. This helps ensure that image updates continue processing without data loss, even during unexpected interruptions.
Beyond the architectural improvements, the Gallery modernization enables new functionality that is currently under development.
One upcoming enhancement is locale-specific image ordering. Instead of maintaining a single global image sequence, each locale will be able to define its own preferred order of product images. This makes it possible to prioritize different visuals for different markets, reflecting local marketing strategies or regional preferences. The overall Gallery initiative specifically includes support for Local Order Number as one of its primary business goals.
The new architecture also prepares the platform for customer-specific galleries, allowing selected image collections to be visible only to designated partners. This capability opens new opportunities for sharing exclusive or customized product imagery without exposing it to all users. While the supporting infrastructure is now in place, this functionality will become available as the remaining business features are implemented.
This release introduces a series of usability improvements across Icecat.biz, making product discovery more intuitive, navigation clearer, and user interactions more consistent. While each enhancement is small on its own, together they create a smoother experience throughout the platform.

To make sponsored content more transparent, Icecat.biz now displays a “(Sponsor)” link directly beneath sponsored brand logos in search results and within the Alternative and Related product sections. Selecting the link opens additional information explaining the sponsorship program. The feature is fully localized and works consistently across desktop and mobile devices.
This small addition helps users immediately recognize sponsored brands while providing additional context when needed.
Submitting feedback should feel natural regardless of the selected language.
Previously, validation messages in the “Report Mistake” form could appear in the browser’s language instead of the language selected within Icecat.biz. This has now been corrected. Validation messages now always follow the currently selected Icecat.biz language, ensuring a more consistent multilingual experience and reducing confusion for international users.
Icecat.biz now provides a subtle loading indicator at the top of the page during navigation.
Instead of wondering whether a page is still loading, users now receive immediate visual feedback whenever they move between pages. The lightweight progress bar appears only while content is loading and disappears automatically once the page is ready, making navigation feel more responsive and reducing the likelihood of repeated clicks during loading.

As AI-powered search engines and web crawlers continue to grow, websites face increasing volumes of automated traffic. While many bots are legitimate and beneficial, others consume infrastructure resources, ignore crawling policies, or collect data without authorization. To better understand and manage this traffic, Icecat has introduced a series of behind-the-scenes improvements focused on monitoring, identifying, and responding to bot activity. These enhancements improve platform stability today while laying the foundation for future protection mechanisms.
During this release, we analyzed bot traffic from the previous sprint to identify crawlers that generated unnecessary load or failed to provide value. Based on this analysis, harmful bots were added to the platform’s robots.txt disallow list, with appropriate crawl delays applied where supported. This approach reduces unwanted crawling while allowing well-behaved search engines to continue accessing public content responsibly.
The results demonstrate a significant reduction in traffic from many unwanted crawlers. Several bots disappeared entirely from the observed traffic after the update, while others showed traffic reductions of more than 95%, lowering unnecessary requests reaching the platform.
The analysis also highlighted an important distinction: not every crawler respects robots.txt.
Some bots continued crawling despite existing restrictions, indicating that configuration alone is not always sufficient. Rather than repeatedly updating the disallow list, the investigation concluded that these cases should be addressed through stronger protection mechanisms such as Web Application Firewall (WAF) or rate-limiting rules targeting specific user agents or network sources.
This insight allows future security improvements to focus on the most effective protection methods instead of relying solely on crawler directives.
Understanding automated traffic is just as important as blocking unwanted requests. To support future monitoring and decision-making, we evaluated several open-source traffic analytics solutions capable of analyzing server logs without relying on third-party tracking scripts.
The research also identified an industry-wide limitation: many AI applications (particularly mobile apps) remove referral information before sending requests. As a result, some AI-generated traffic appears as direct traffic regardless of the analytics platform being used.

As additional AI solutions are introduced, users will be able to access them through a single, trusted location, making it easier to explore new technologies that streamline product content management and support the continuous improvement of product data.
This sprint included a substantial investment in technical debt reduction, infrastructure maintenance, and platform hardening. That work improves the reliability of Icecat’s services today while making future feature development faster and safer.
We focused on strengthening critical platform components, optimizing internal processing, improving developer tooling, and enhancing operational monitoring. Together, these improvements reduce operational risk and provide a more stable experience for partners relying on Icecat’s APIs and services.
Security remains a continuous effort rather than a one-time initiative. As part of ongoing penetration test remediation, support for the obsolete TLS 1.0 and TLS 1.1 protocols has been removed from bo.icecat.biz, eliminating known cryptographic weaknesses and aligning the platform with modern security standards. This strengthens protection while ensuring compliance with current security best practices.
We also proactively reviewed database connection pool management for Icecat.biz category requests. By improving monitoring and validating pool behavior under high concurrency, the platform is better protected against resource exhaustion that could otherwise lead to degraded performance or service interruptions during traffic peaks.
Much of Icecat’s platform depends on asynchronous processing powered by Kafka. During this release, several technical debt initiatives focused on making these message-processing pipelines more predictable and efficient.
Engineers resolved issues that could leave Kafka consumers in inconsistent states, reduced unnecessary duplicate message generation, investigated message distribution anomalies, and improved consumer coordination strategies. Collectively, these changes lower infrastructure load, reduce the risk of processing bottlenecks, and improve the overall stability of product data processing.
Another important reliability improvement addressed distributed locking within the platform. Correct lock acquisition is essential for preventing overlapping background jobs from executing simultaneously. The fix reduces the possibility of duplicate notifications, race conditions, and inconsistent processing during scheduled tasks.
The team optimized how product information is associated with physical gallery assets, addressing scenarios where published product images could unexpectedly become unavailable.
This improvement helps prevent random image disappearance and reduces the risk of downstream systems, CDNs, and partner integrations caching incorrect “image not found” responses. As a result, image delivery becomes more reliable across the entire distribution chain.
Operational visibility is just as important as application stability.
The existing Health Monitor dashboard has been reorganized into dedicated monitoring pages, separating Downloads and Distributor-related metrics from the main dashboard. This makes operational data easier to navigate, reduces dashboard complexity, and enables engineers to locate relevant health information more quickly during investigations or incident response.
A significant portion of the sprint focused on improving the internal quality of the codebase.
Several frontend components were migrated to shared modern patterns, deprecated implementations were removed, user suggestion components were standardized, obsolete localization resources were cleaned up, and automated tests protecting the critical pipeline were stabilized. These changes do not alter functionality directly, but they reduce code complexity, improve consistency across the platform, and increase confidence when introducing future features.
