Vinted Leads the Clothing Market in France

Vinted, the popular platform for second-hand fashion, has become the top clothing retailer in France by sales volume, surpassing even Amazon and domestic chain Kiabi. This marks a significant milestone for the growing recommerce sector, which involves the resale of used goods online. The European recommerce market was valued at €94 billion last year and is projected to grow by 14% by 2027.

Survey Includes Online and Brick-and-Mortar Retailers

According to a recent consumer study by the French Fashion Institute (IFM), Vinted led the market in clothing sales during the first quarter of this year. The research included both e-commerce platforms and physical retail stores. Amazon and Kiabi followed behind in second and third place, respectively.

Pre-owned Fashion Gains Ground

The study found that second-hand clothing now accounts for 10.9% of total sales volume, with an even greater market share—16.3%—among younger shoppers aged 18 to 34.

Despite their global popularity, Chinese e-commerce players Shein and Temu were less dominant in France, ranking fifth and 24th, respectively. IFM reports that Amazon, Shein, and Temu together made up nearly one-third of online clothing sales during the same period. However, their combined share of total clothing sales, including brick-and-mortar, was just 7%.

Digital channels now represent 29.4% of all clothing purchases in France, indicating a steady shift toward e-commerce in fashion retail.

Price Sensitivity Drives Sales

French consumers remain highly price-conscious, with 36.4% of clothing purchases occurring during promotional periods. This trend is also evident in the recommerce space, where affordability is a major draw.
