Shopify has introduced Canvas, a new AI-assisted design workspace that lets merchants build and redesign online stores while viewing every page in one interactive environment.
Rolling out to merchants in October, Canvas works with Sidekick, Shopify’s AI agent, to let users make anything from small design changes to complete store redesigns. Merchants can edit elements manually or describe what they want through Sidekick’s chat interface, with the changes appearing directly on Canvas.
The goal is to make custom ecommerce design accessible without requiring extensive coding or design experience.
Traditional website editors usually require merchants to move between individual pages, templates and settings. Canvas takes a different approach.
Every page can be viewed together in an infinite visual workspace. Merchants can move across their storefront, zoom into individual elements and see how different pages work together.
The workspace also displays the real store, not a static design mockup. Users can preview interactions and animations and test pages with different products, collections and screen sizes.
Sidekick operates directly within this environment. A merchant could, for example, ask it to change the direction of a homepage, redesign a section or apply coordinated changes across the store. The AI agent can modify theme files, validate its code and inspect screenshots of its own changes before presenting the result.
Shopify says Sidekick made more than 25 million theme edits during the first half of 2026, and Canvas expands its ability to work across entire storefronts rather than isolated sections.
Shopify is positioning Sidekick as more than a tool that simply turns prompts into code.
During the design process, it can ask questions, propose approaches and remember earlier preferences. This lets merchants respond to actual designs instead of describing every detail before the AI begins working.
The approach could be particularly useful for smaller e-commerce businesses that want a distinctive storefront but lack dedicated developers or large design budgets.
Canvas also remains an early-stage product. Shopify says it is not yet replacing the existing theme editor, and some functionality is still missing. At launch, limitations include support for third-party Theme Store themes, Markets, translations, rollouts and app blocks or embeds.
Canvas can make it considerably easier to create a polished storefront, but the design of an e-commerce site is only part of the customer experience.
Once shoppers reach a product page, the quality of the underlying product information matters just as much. Images, specifications, descriptions, product relationships and rich content still determine how clearly a customer can understand and compare what is being sold.
This is where the development is relevant for Icecat.
Structured product information and rich product content can complement the increasingly flexible storefronts merchants can create with tools such as Canvas. A retailer may now redesign an entire store much faster, but maintaining accurate, complete content across hundreds or thousands of product pages remains a different challenge.
That distinction becomes even more important as Shopify expands beyond traditional storefronts. Its Shopify Catalog structures and distributes product data to AI shopping channels, including services where shoppers may discover products without first visiting the merchant’s website.
The result is an e-commerce environment where both presentation and underlying data matter. AI can help merchants build better storefronts faster, while structured product content helps ensure that the products displayed inside them remain complete, accurate and understandable.
Canvas makes custom e-commerce design easier to create. For merchants, the next challenge is making sure the product experience behind that design is just as strong.
