Ocado has secured a new deal to build a large automated warehouse for an unnamed, fast-growing European retailer, giving its robotics business an important new customer after a challenging period for the company.
The new Customer Fulfilment Centre (CFC) is expected to become operational in 2028. It will use Ocado’s latest Re technology, including its 600 Series robots, On-Grid Robotic Pick system, and fully automated freezer. The retailer plans to quickly transfer existing online orders to the facility, with the warehouse expected to open at just over half of its total design capacity.
The identity of the retailer and the financial terms of the agreement have not been disclosed.
The agreement is particularly interesting because Ocado has recently faced questions about demand for its large automated fulfilment centres.
Several facilities operated by North American partners have closed or faced changes as online grocery demand developed differently than expected. Kroger closed three automated warehouses in the US, while Canadian retailer Sobeys also reduced its commitment to Ocado’s CFC model.
Meanwhile, Ocado has expanded its strategy. Rather than relying exclusively on large centralized warehouses, the company is increasingly offering technology that can automate fulfilment from retailers’ existing store networks.
Earlier this year, for example, Ocado signed an agreement with Asda to provide software and automation technology for its e-commerce operations.
The new European deal therefore shows that Ocado has not abandoned the large CFC model. Instead, it is developing several fulfilment options for retailers with different operational requirements.
The upcoming facility will showcase several technologies designed to reduce manual work inside fulfilment centres.
Ocado’s lightweight 600 Series robots move across its warehouse grid to retrieve products, while On-Grid Robotic Pick allows robotic arms to pick items directly from storage. The automated freezer extends this approach to frozen goods, which have traditionally been one of the more challenging areas to automate.
Together, these systems are designed to automate a larger proportion of the online grocery ordering process, from storage through picking and preparation.
For a retailer that already has significant e-commerce volumes, this can make fulfilment faster and reduce the amount of manual handling required for each order.
Robots may physically move the products, but successful automated fulfilment also depends heavily on information.
A grocery warehouse can contain thousands of products with different dimensions, weights, packaging types, storage requirements, and expiration characteristics. Automated systems need to identify these items correctly and understand how they should be stored and handled.
That makes accurate product information part of the operational infrastructure.
Structured attributes such as dimensions, weight, identifiers, packaging details, and product categories can support warehouse planning and automated processes while maintaining consistency between the physical product and its digital record.
For e-commerce retailers, the same information can then support the customer-facing side of the journey, including product pages, search, filtering, recommendations, and AI-powered discovery.
Ocado’s new agreement comes as retailers invest in automation across more parts of the e-commerce supply chain.
AI and robotics are increasingly supporting inventory management, picking, returns, delivery planning, and warehouse operations. At the same time, AI is transforming product discovery and customer service at the front end of ecommerce.
These applications may look very different, but they increasingly depend on connected and reliable data.
For retailers, this means product information should not be viewed only as content for an online store. As physical and digital retail systems become more connected, the same data can support processes throughout the product journey.
Ocado’s latest European deal demonstrates that large-scale robotic fulfilment still has a place in that future. However, the evolution of its strategy also suggests that there will not be a single automation model for every retailer. The more important goal will be building flexible systems where robotics, software, and reliable product information work together to make ecommerce fulfilment more efficient.
