For all the talk about being more connected than ever, a growing share of young adults appear to be living with remarkably little face-to-face contact.
A recent analysis of US Census data found that nearly 10% of Americans aged 23 to 29 reported having no in-person interaction with another person during an average day. Before the pandemic, that figure was only around 3%. It rose sharply during COVID restrictions, reached roughly 10% in 2023, and has only declined slightly since.
The most socially active young adults have largely returned toward pre-pandemic patterns. The most isolated have not. Among the bottom quarter in social contact, time spent with other people collapsed during the pandemic and has remained near zero.
That makes this more than a story about temporary lockdown habits. It suggests that for part of a generation, isolation has become embedded in everyday life.
The pandemic clearly accelerated the change, but it did not create all the conditions that led to it.
Many everyday activities no longer require physical interaction. People can work remotely, order groceries, stream entertainment, exercise at home, study online, speak to customer service through chat, date through apps, and increasingly ask AI assistants for information or companionship.
Each of these technologies solves a real problem. Collectively, however, they also remove countless small reasons to encounter other people.
A trip to the shop is not usually considered a meaningful social event. Neither is commuting, chatting briefly with a colleague, collecting a takeaway, or asking someone in a store for advice. Yet these minor encounters once made up a large part of ordinary social life.
When enough of them disappear, the effect becomes noticeable.
The American Time Use Survey also shows that screen-based activity has continued to rise. Americans spent an average of 37 minutes per day on computers and social media in 2025, compared with 25 minutes in 2015, while teenagers averaged around 90 minutes. Meanwhile, 35% of employed Americans still worked from home at least some of the time in 2025.
Perhaps the most interesting part of the data is that social life is not declining equally across the board.
Some young adults remain highly connected and have largely resumed their old habits. Others appear to have become much more isolated.
The Financial Times describes this as a form of “socializing inequality.” Before the pandemic, even relatively isolated young adults still spent a meaningful portion of their day with other people. Today, the most disconnected group spends almost none.
That distinction matters because averages can hide the real problem.
If one group becomes highly social again while another retreats almost entirely into solitary routines, society can appear to have “recovered” even while a significant minority has not.
This trend is not directly an ecommerce story, but commerce is part of the environment that enables increasingly solitary lifestyles.
Digital retail has made life easier in countless ways. A product can be discovered, compared, bought, paid for, and delivered without speaking to another person. AI shopping assistants may make that journey even more seamless.
From a business perspective, this is extraordinary progress in convenience.
From a social perspective, it raises a more complicated question: what happens when convenience consistently removes friction that once produced human interaction?
That does not mean e-commerce should become deliberately inconvenient. Nor does it make technology responsible for social isolation. People value delivery, remote work, digital services, and flexible lifestyles for good reasons.
But companies may increasingly need to think about the kind of experiences they are designing, not only how efficient those experiences are. Physical retail, events, community spaces, customer service, and even brand communities can still provide forms of connection that purely transactional digital experiences cannot.
The arrival of conversational AI makes this question more urgent. AI assistants can already answer questions, help people shop, plan journeys, provide advice, and hold long conversations. Future agents may remove even more interactions from everyday tasks.
Again, this can be genuinely useful. But the ability to replace an interaction does not necessarily mean that replacing it is always desirable.
We are entering a period in which technology can increasingly eliminate the need to speak to another human being. That makes the social value of human contact easier to overlook precisely because the technology works so well.
The data does not prove that remote work, e-commerce, smartphones, or AI caused the rise in isolation. The pandemic remains an obvious turning point, and social behavior is influenced by many economic and cultural factors.
Still, the direction deserves attention. Technology has spent decades removing friction from everyday life. We can now accomplish more tasks alone, faster and with less effort than at any previous point.
That is an impressive achievement. But friction was never only wasted time. Sometimes it was also conversation, familiarity, chance encounters, friendship, mentorship, or simply being around other people.
If almost one in ten young adults can now move through an average day without a single face-to-face interaction, the next challenge may not be making digital life even more seamless.
It may be figuring out which parts of human life should remain inconvenient enough to require another person.
