Dutch Online Sales Increases 9% in H1-2022

Online shoppers in the Netherlands spent more than 16 billion euros in the first half of 2022 compared to last year’s period. Dutch online sales grew 9% compared to the previous year’s period. During the first six months, 168 million online purchases were made by Dutch online shoppers, according to the most recent Thuiswinkel Market Monitor. As a result, 5.3 billion euros worth of goods were sold online. For example, before the pandemic, this was 3.3 billion euros in 2019. Nevertheless, 14% fewer goods purchases were made online in the first two quarters compared to the previous year.

Services expanded in all categories.

In particular, the first half of 2022 saw significant growth in online service sales. Compared to Q2 2021, sales of package vacations increased by 129%, while tickets for attractions and events increased by 104%. As a result, with a total of 2.5 billion euros in sales, the service sector had more substantial revenues in Q2 of this year compared to the period preceding the pandemic. In Q2 of 2019, the sector’s revenue was 2.3 billion euros.

Increased smartphone usage

According to the Thuiswinkel Markt Monitor, one in three internet purchases is made on a smartphone. Food categories, event tickets, and fashion had the most smartphone purchases. However, even if it was used less than a year ago, the most popular device is still a laptop (51%). However, this is a decrease of 4%.

iDEAL leads the way

Most internet purchases were made via iDEAL (70%). However, the credit card is the second most popular means of internet payment (8%). Additionally, 4% more online orders placed on smartphones were paid with iDEAL. The increase in iDEAL usage is mainly because of the food category.
