OpenAI Introduces Customizable ChatGPT for Their Subscribers

An AI chatbot that can seemingly do anything was first introduced to the world by OpenAI with its release of ChatGPT a year ago. The company is now offering a ground-breaking update that lets users customize ChatGPT for specific situations without any coding. At OpenAI’s first developer conference, DevDay, in San Francisco on Monday, the company unveiled Custom GPTs in addition to a cheaper, turbocharged GPT-4, with reduced costs for developers integrating its models into their apps, and the announcement that ChatGPT currently has an astounding 100 million weekly users.

The Need for Customization

According to an OpenAI statement, “Since launching ChatGPT, people have been asking for ways to customize ChatGPT to fit specific ways that they use it.” “We introduced Custom Instructions in July, which allowed users to customize some settings, but people kept asking for more power. A lot of experienced users keep a list of well-constructed prompts and instruction sets, which they manually enter into ChatGPT. GPTs now will take care of everything for you.”

OpenAI confirmed on Monday its long-standing indications that highly customizable and autonomous AI models will be an essential part of its future products. In a blog post, OpenAI stated, “GPTs will continue to get more useful and smarter, and you’ll eventually be able to let them take on real tasks in the real world.”

The GPT Agents

These AI agents—which OpenAI is referring to as GPTs—will be available via the GPT Store in the upcoming weeks. Web browsing, DALL-E, and OpenAI’s Code Interpreter tool for creating and running software can all be made accessible to each GPT. Additionally, the builder interface has a “Knowledge” section where users can upload custom data, such as the DevDay event schedule. OpenAI lets GPTs connect to external services, such as Canva and Zapier, through a feature called Actions. This feature also allows GPTs to retrieve data from external sources, like databases and emails.

For now, there are few details available regarding the look and functionality of the store, but OpenAI has promised to eventually pay creators an amount that would depend on how much their created GPTs are being used. Which is a great possibility not only for the users but also for developers.

“We will also spotlight the most useful and delightful GPTs we come across in categories like productivity, education, and ‘just for fun’.”

Future Plans

With the release of customized GPTs, OpenAI is now in direct competition with other AI bot platforms, such as Character.AI and Meta, which launched numerous of its own AI characters in Messenger, Instagram, and WhatsApp. OpenAI doesn’t have anything against people creating GPTs with human-like personas, but it positions GPTs rather to be used for more utility-focused tasks than its competitors.

In the end, OpenAI believes that the development of GPTs will bring them closer to artificial general intelligence, or AGI creation, which would be AI superintelligence. Limiting access to members who have paid for access may also help boost the company’s already quickly increasing income since it is rumored that it is looking for an investment valuation as high as $90 billion.
