My name is Raghavan Mand. I’m from India. Here is my point of view on the meaning of debentures in accounting. The term “debenture”, along with that of “treasury stock”, was derived from the French word for debt, “dette”. It was first used to describe security issued by a corporation to raise money. A debenture is a form of corporate bond and as such is a long-term borrowing instrument whose interest rates are fixed and paid at regular intervals at predetermined dates. A Debenture is a certificate of indebtedness for an amount not exceeding Rs.10,000.00 issued by a company to its shareholders as part of its share capital.
